Meet the Teacher Behind Spot the Mistake
Hi, I’m Stephanie.
I spent over a decade teaching middle and high school math in NYC (self-contained classes, ICT classrooms, IEP meetings, pacing pressure, all of it).
Every year, I saw the same predictable mistakes show up… even after reteaching.
That’s when I realized:
- The issue wasn’t effort.
- It wasn’t mindset.
- It was structure.
Spot the Mistake grew out of that realization, a simple, repeatable way to turn student errors into instructional clarity.
Most classrooms respond to mistakes like this: “That’s wrong, here’s the right way.”
Spot the Mistake shifts the conversation to: “What kind of mistake is this?”
That one question changes everything. Instead of students thinking:
“I’m bad at math.”
They start thinking:
“Oh. I rushed.”
“Oh. I misunderstood the concept.”
“Oh. I combined unlike terms.”
Awareness interrupts the pattern. And when the pattern breaks, reteaching decreases.
